problem getting rid of an undo tablespace

problem getting rid of an undo tablespace

David,

When you say that you "I shut down the database, changed the entry to point
to the new tablespace, but the database would not open up. " what do you
mean? of course you know that you cannot edit the spfile directly to make
any changes. and if you did, the spfile is now foobar and you cannot
recover it. you can, however, create a new init.ora file from the info in
the spfile, remove or rename the spfile and start your database.

I think, generally, you did the correct thing - although you could have
changed the undo_tablespace entry with an alter system command. you then
would just need to wait for all active transactions to complete before
dropping the old undo tablespace.

In prefer to recreate undo as follows:

create a new undo tablespace
shutdown normal
change the init.ora file to change the undo_tablespace entry to the new
tablespace.
startup
drop the old undo tablespace.

good luck!

Subject: Re: problem getting rid of an undo tablespace

I have a problem with one of the files in my undo tablepace.

Given that there are not any transactions to undo, it seemed simplest to
just drop the file.
But I haven 't been able to get the database to let me do that.

So, I created a 2nd undo tablespace with the intention of taking the first
off line and then dropping it.
But I haven 't been able to get the database to let me take it off line.

I found a parameter in my spfile called "undo_tablespace " which was set to
the old tablespace.
I shut down the database, changed the entry to point to the new tablespace,
but the database would not open up.

Any ideas on how to clear out the corrupted undo tablespace file?

Thanks in advance!
